Better not touch it with car products, if the material is damaged or the mechanical properties changed, you may hear some anomalies during playback.

Maybe the experts on the forum can suggest a safer way of doing that.

I think the reason of the problem is oxidation and moisture in the tropical climates. The rubber will eventually break but that may take a long long time.

Take the speaker, or just shoot a picture and show a professional, they can certainly tell you what's going on, and what to expect.
