It is a combination of a very high gain power amplifier (GFA-5200) preceded by a passive level controller. There is no separate preamplifier stage in the GCA-510 at all.

Adcom Passive Control
The GCA-510 operates as a completely "passive" (no gain) unit, with absolutely minimal sonic impact. The passive part in the GCA-510 is strictly a "line level input switcher", with its high quality volume attenuator that the only effect the GCA-510 will have on the sound is volume adjustment.

It adds no noise, no distortion, in fact, it changes nothing. So, as far as your ears are concerned, it's sonically invisible. You always can use the GCA-510 ultimate passive level control with maximum fidelity.
