I watched BOTH Spider 3 and the Pirates of the Caribbean. Perhaps I have HIGH expectations beforehand, ended up VERY DISAPPOINTED for both films.
Spiderman 3, don't expect it to be very good .... ended up even worst. The bigger disappointment is Pirates of the Caribbean. So many of the plots are predictable ... Second, Johny Depp is not the main actor. My feeling is, no one is. As each an everyone takes a share, I feel lost .... ha..ha....

I agree with your brother. I would say there are a number of reasons to this:
1. There is no central plot; the plot tried to do too many things (e.g. save Jack, kill Davy Jones & fight the East Indian Co. etc)
2. No main actor; all are just supporting. Unlike the first one, Jack is quite outstanding. That makes him funny and Johnny Depp got a good chance to interpret Jack Sparrow.
3. Talking about too many "unnecessary" things and made the movie tooooooo long.
